You are invited to attend a rare and special cultural event―a Latvian Chamber Music concert!
It is a unique event in many ways. The music which will be performed by nineteen very
talented and accomplished professional Latvian musicians of all generations, who are
coming together from all over America, Canada, and Latvia especially for the Latvian
Song and Dance Festival.
You will hear voice, flute, alto flute, violin, viola, violoncello, bassoon, trumpet, piano,
and double bass performances of a mosaic of musical pieces written by Latvian
composers from 1897 to 2005. They range from pieces for solo instruments, small
ensembles, voice, and chamber orchestras.
The French writer R. Rolland has said, "Music is the song of the ages and the flower of
history; it grows out of sorrows as well as the joys of humanity.” I find this observation to
be very true about Latvian music. Latvian history has been hard and tumultuous through
the centuries, but song and, later, instrumental music has kept the spirit of individual
freedom, joy of life, and love for our homeland and its natural beauty alive and strong.
Latvian professional music began to be established in the second half of the 19th century,
which makes it relatively “young." But at the same time it has great maturity and emotional
depth thanks to a very rich heritage of folk songs and melodies and our the high level of
musical education attained by our forefathers, who started the professional music tradition.
During this concert you will be exposed to picturesque landscapes, human contemplation,
dance, sentiment, joy, improvisation, and dreams, which for a few hours will take you along
the path of a century of Latvian history.
I am very excited to greet you there and share with you this wonderful music.
